Video/Pics: Security fencing put up around White House, US Capitol, VP residence over Election Day

Security fencing has been installed around the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington, D.C., ahead of Election Day.

According to The Washington Post, the new security fencing was installed on Sunday in preparation for any potential political unrest that could be caused by Tuesday’s presidential election between Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The Washington Post reported that while law enforcement authorities have not cited any credible threats in the area related to Tuesday’s election and while Washington’s police chief told reporters there was “no need for any alarm,” the U.S. Secret Service installed eight-foot-high metal fencing around the complex of the White House and the Treasury Department, parts of Lafayette Square, around the Naval Observatory, and the vice president’s residence.

A video shared on X, formerly Twitter, shows the installation of some of the additional security fencing around Washington, D.C.

Law enforcement officials also reinstalled temporary barriers with signs reading, “Police Line: Do not cross.”

Pictures shared by The New York Post show additional security fencing being installed ahead of Election Day.

In addition to the Washington, D.C., security fencing, The Washington Post said the Secret Service was installing additional security outside the convention center at West Palm Beach, Florida, where the former president is expected to host his election watch party.

“The Secret Service is working closely with federal, state and local partners in Washington, DC and Palm Beach County, Florida to ensure heightened levels of Election Day safety and security,” the Secret Service told The Washington Post. “These enhancements are not in response to any specific issue but are part of wide ranging public safety preparations for Tuesday’s election.”

According to The Washington Post, Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith announced last week that roughly 3,300 D.C. police officers are expected to work 12-hour shifts throughout the election as an extra precaution in Washington, D.C., “to ensure we have enough officers on the street and in every corner of the District.”

The Washington Post reported that business owners and property owners in the area have also increased private security measures and reinforced street-level entrances and windows in anticipation of any potential rioting or looting following Election Day.
