President Joe Biden announced Thursday that top economic adviser Brian Deese would be leaving his current role. Biden did not say when Deese would be leaving the White House. He did not yet name a replacement.
“Brian has a unique ability to translate complex policy challenges into concrete actions that improve the lives of American people. He has helped steer my economic vision into reality, and managed the transition of our historic economic recovery to steady and stable growth,” Biden said in a statement.
“I am grateful to his wife Kara and his children Adeline and Clark for letting us borrow Brian. I know well what it must have been like to say goodbye to him for the regular long commute to Washington, and I know they’re excited to welcome him home,” Biden added.
As reported by the Daily Caller, Deese worked with Biden to develop the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPs and Science Act.
The New York Times reported Deese’s departure was expected due to his long commutes from New England, where his family lives. Deese has not yet announced his next job.
It is the second major shake-up at the White House in recent weeks. Biden’s Chief of Staff, Ron Klain, is stepping down amid mounting scandals in the Biden administration, including a Special Counsel investigation into Joe Biden’s classified documents and a probe into his son Hunter Biden.
The New York Times broke the news that Klain would be stepping down, but was staying for a transition period that was likely to run though Biden’s February 7 State of the Union Address.
“His resignation would be a striking moment of turnover at the top of an administration that has been relatively stable through the first half of Mr. Biden’s term, and Mr. Klain takes pride that he has lasted longer than any other Democratic president’s first chief of staff in more than half a century,” the Times wrote. ‘But with Mr. Biden expected to announce by spring that he is running for re-election, advisers predict more moves as some aides shift from the White House to the campaign.”
“The departure would also come at a time when the White House faces a widening array of political and legal threats from a newly appointed special counsel investigating the improper handling of classified documents and a flurry of other inquiries by the newly installed Republican majority in the House,” the report added. “The next chief of staff will be charged with managing the defense of Mr. Biden’s White House and any counterattack as the 2024 election approaches.”
As the Republican House Majority continues to put heat on top officials, such as Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Biden’s scandals continue to mount, it will be interesting to see what shakeup comes next.
