A suspected car thief sought help from local residents after he was abandoned by his comrades during a shootout with a Tennessee homeowner last week, according to authorities.
The harrowing incident unfolded on Thursday night in Shelby County near Memphis.
A man received a call from a neighbor warning him about suspicious characters milling around vehicles parked at his home.
When he stepped outside, he encountered two males in his driveway who were apparently accompanied by two more people sitting in a sedan parked in the middle of the street.
“The homeowner said when the suspects saw him, the two in the driveway took off running, and one turned around and shot him,” WREG Memphis reports.
“The victim returned fire, but that suspect got away, Deputies said they were able to arrest one of the suspects, later identified as 18-year-old Marreo Mays.”
Mays reportedly knocked on doors of other homes in the neighborhood, demanding help after the skirmish.
“Y’all left me. Come pick me up,” he was overhead yelling into his phone.
Mays was charged with two counts of burglary of a vehicle and vandalism.
The homeowner is recovering from surgery after being shot in the ankle, relatives told WREG.
Multiple windows in his vehicles were broken during the attempted robbery.
