A shootout at a convenience store ended with a gun-wielding thief fleeing from an armed clerk who returned fire this week, according to authorities.
The harrowing incident unfolded at around noon on Sunday in Sugar Land, Texas.
A masked man entered WB Food Mart and attempted to carry out an armed robbery.
Surveillance footage of the subsequent gun battle was published on social media by the Sugar Land Police Department (SLPD).
“The man entered the store, displayed a handgun and discharged a round into the ceiling, approached the checkout window, pointed his handgun at the clerk and demanded cash,” SLPD explained in a statement.
“The clerk grabbed a gun, and the suspect fired several shots in the employee’s direction, so the clerk returned fire in self-defense. The suspect fired a final round toward the clerk before running away.”
No injuries were reported as a result of the shootout, despite it taking place at nearly point-blank range.
SPLD credits the bulletproof enclosure at the register with protecting the clerk from potentially fatal wounds.
No arrests have been made as of the latest available updates.
Investigators are looking for a “black man in his 20s wearing black pants, a black hoodie, a white t-shirt and a black face covering.”
