Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) dressed down for his return to the US Capitol Monday where he’ll resume work following a two-month hiatus battling clinical depression.
The freshman senator awkwardly greeted members of the press as he arrived at the Capitol Monday sporting basketball shorts and a hoodie sweatshirt.
“It’s great to be back,” he told reporters.
Despite arriving dressed like a slob, other photos from Monday show Fetterman later donned a suit.
This is the first time Fetterman has returned to Congress since he checked himself into the Walter Reed Medical Center in mid-February just months after defeating GOP opponent Dr. Mehmet Oz in the 2022 midterms.
In his diagnosis, Walter Reed neuropsychiatry chief Dr. David Williamson wrote the Pennsylvania senator experienced “severe symptoms of depression with low energy and motivation, minimal speech, poor sleep, slowed thinking, slowed movement, feelings of guilt and worthlessness.”
Fetterman’s absence was so protracted Republican legislators in his state began demanding he show his face or resign.
Fetterman had also been plagued with criticism over his mental fitness on the campaign trail as he exhibited notable speech problems following a stroke he suffered last May.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also returned to the Capitol Monday after he “fell and suffered a concussion and a broken rib at a private dinner at a Washington hotel in early March,” according to the Washington Post.
