A helicopter was badly damaged when a suspect attempted to steal the chopper from an airport in California this week, according to reports.
The wild incident unfolded at around 5 a.m. on Wednesday morning at Sacramento Executive Airport.
Authorities were notified that several helicopters had been broken into and that one had briefly gone airborne before smashing to the tarmac.
Responding officers found a Bell 429 lying on its side, having sustained serious damage.
Photographs and videos shot at the scene show a substantial debris field around the aircraft.
“The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now in charge of the incident and said there is a person of interest. Special Agent in Charge Sean Reagan said a combination of evidence collected, witness information and surveillance video lead them to a person of interest,” KCRA reports.
Oddly, there are no surveillance cameras on the tarmac at the airport, according to a reporter who interviewed a Sacramento County spokesperson.
