Chicago Area High School Slammed Over Segregated Math Courses for ‘Black’ and ‘Latinx’ Students Only

A Chicago area high school has come under fire after it was discovered the school is offering segregated mathematics classes.

Evanston Township High School District 202 (ETHS) is providing courses in calculus, pre-calculus, and algebra, which are only accessible to students who identify as Black or “Latinx”. ETHS’s math curriculum for the next school year suggests that the segregated classes will persist. One of ETHS’s pre-calculus courses describes, “[t]he course is restricted to students who identify as Black male students.” While another pre-calculus course mentions that it is only for “Latinx” students, and a third course does not have any restrictions based on gender or race.

The disturbing report that an Illinois school is reintroducing segregation was reported by the Twitter savant Libs of Tik Tok.

As the Spectator’s Amber Athey reported, the high school is offering math classes segregated by race, as can be found in the classes’ listings for the 2023-24 school year on the school’s website.

“There are at least five course offerings at Evanston Township High School that are only open to either black or ‘Latinx’ students,” Athey continued. “A course description for an Algebra 2 class, for example, states that “this code for the course is restricted to students who identify as Latinx, all genders.”

ETHS also offers segregated AP calculus courses for Black and “Latinx” students. The segregated courses have provoked backlash online and on social media.

There is absolutely no excuse for a math class, or any class for that matter, to be open only to people to Latino or Black Americans. Does math somehow change based on who is learning it?” Gabriel Nadales, Our America National Director, told The National Desk. “That’s just ridiculous.”

But this is just another example of bureaucratic employees who would prefer to divide Americans on the basis of race than look at that which unites us,” Nadales added. “American students shouldn’t have to worry about their race when they are learning pre-calculus.”

The exclusivity of the school’s classes has drawn the ire of critics, including Mark Perry, a professor emeritus at the University of Michigan, and an academic fellow with the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) in Washington, D.C.

Perry has expressed that he will be filing a federal civil rights complaint against ETHS. He has previously filed complaints in similar cases, including one when he discovered that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was offering fellowship and scholarship programs that excluded students based on their race and sex. One of Perry’s complaints led UNC to remove the criteria for a nutrition fellowship that had stated it was only open to Black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) populations.

ETHS has refuted the allegations that it restricts students from taking AP classes based on race. According to Crisis in the Classroom (CITC), the school informed them that it has never had such a process. The district stated that it has updated the phrasing in its course request guide to reflect its objectives and practices.
