President Joe Biden had to rearrange his entire schedule on Monday due to an unexpected root canal procedure.
According to a statement from Physician to the President Kevin O’Connor, the president had his initial dental appointment for his lower right premolar on Sunday after experiencing discomfort.
“They determined that endodontic treatment (root canal) was most appropriate. Initial root canal procedure was performed at the time (Sunday), with a plan for specialized endodontal follow-up in the near future. The president tolerated the procedure well. There were no complications,” O’Connor wrote.
However, on Monday morning, the White House announced that Biden would undergo the second part of the procedure later in the day, as he was still experiencing “further discomfort.” This sudden decision led to the rescheduling or modification of Biden’s entire public schedule.
“He is experiencing further discomfort this morning, which was anticipated. The endodontal specialty team from Walter Reed will complete the president’s root canal today, at the White House.”
Among the events affected was Biden’s planned remarks to celebrate the men’s and women’s NCAA championship teams from the 2022-2023 season. Vice President Kamala Harris stepped in to deliver the remarks on his behalf. Additionally, his bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the White House reception for Chiefs of Mission had to be postponed and rescheduled for the following day, as stated by the White House.
It is worth noting that this dental procedure was not the first time Biden had undergone medical procedures during his presidency. In 2021, he was placed under anesthesia for a routine colonoscopy, temporarily transferring power to Vice President Harris. In February of this year, Biden had a cancerous skin lesion removed from his chest.
The White House stipulated that “the President will not be put under anesthesia and the 25th amendment will not be invoked.”
