4 hospitalized after strange odor detected on plane

Four flight attendants were hospitalized after they reportedly became sick following the detection of a strange odor on an Alaska Airlines flight from Lihue, Hawaii, to Seattle, Washington, on Thursday. The incident forced Alaska Airlines Flight 810 to be diverted.

According to Fox 13 Seattle, Alaska Airlines Flight 810 departed from Lihue, Hawaii, at roughly 11 p.m. on Thursday and was initially expected to land in Seattle, Washington. However, approximately an hour and a half into Thursday night’s flight, the plane was forced to land in Honolulu, according to FlightAware, a flight tracking website.

A spokesperson for Alaska Airlines told USA Today that four flight attendants became sick during Thursday’s flight after an unknown odor was detected inside the plane’s cabin. The spokesperson also told USA Today that 119 passengers and six crew members were on Alaska Airlines Flight 810.

The four flight attendants who reportedly became ill after the unidentified odor was detected were transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation after the plane was diverted to Honolulu, according to USA Today.

Fox 13 Seattle reported that Alaska Airlines indicated that none of the pilots or passengers on Flight 810 required medical attention during Thursday night’s incident. According to Fox Business, Alaska Airlines has not yet revealed the odor that was detected during the flight. The airline also did not provide an update regarding the condition of the flight attendants after they were evaluated at a hospital in Honolulu.

According to FlightAware, the plane affected by the strange odor has been identified as a Boeing 737-800. Following the incident, the airplane was flown back to Seattle without passengers for additional inspection. Meanwhile, Fox 13 Seattle reported that the airline worked with passengers to provide them with other flights to Seattle.

Fox Business reported that Alaska Airlines is currently working to merge with Hawaiian Airlines. The outlet noted that Alaska Airlines previously experienced a significant airplane incident earlier this year when a Boeing 737-9 MAX door plug blew out during one of the company’s flights.
